Delicious Naturally Sweetened Berry Jam
Wondering how to make your own jam or use up leftover berries that are sitting in the back of your fridge? We have the perfect recipe for you! This easy 4 ingredient jam can be made with any fresh or frozen berries you have on hand. All you need is a lemon, maple syrup or honey and chia seeds!
Chia seeds are the key ingredient to making homemade jam that is quick, easy and healthy. Chia seeds absorb liquid and create a thicker texture in recipes like chia seed pudding, overnight oats and chia jam.
How To Make Strawberry Chia Seed Jam:
Simply add your berry jam ingredients to a small pot and reduce on the stovetop over low-medium heat until the strawberries soften and get extra juicy. This easy strawberry chia seed jam takes less than 10 minutes to make!
I like to wait until the strawberries start to soften and then I use a fork or a potato masher to smash the berries. After I smash the berries to release their fruit juice, then I stir in the chia seeds and turn off the heat.
Allow the jam to cool before transferring to an airtight container or glass jar and storing in the fridge.
Everything You'll Need
- Strawberries: This recipe works with fresh or frozen strawberries.
- Chia Seeds: Chia seeds add plant based protein and naturally thicken this jam recipe so we won't need any cornstarch.
- Lemon Juice: The citric acid in the lemon juice helps to naturally preserve our jam so it stays good for longer in the fridge.
- Lemon Zest: This ingredient is optional, but a little lemon zest compliments the flavor of sweet berries.
- Maple Syrup or Honey: Although fruit is naturally sweet on its own, adding some maple syrup or honey makes this taste more like the jam you're used to.
Need to make a substitution?
Can I use different berries?
Yes! This recipe calls for strawberries, but you could substitute raspberries, blackberries or other fruit if you'd like.
No lemons?
Try adding some orange juice if you don't have any lemons on hand. Orange juice will change the overall flavor a bit, but the citrus still helps to preserve our homemade jam.
