This old-fashioned peach cobbler is a breeze to make and one of my favorite crowd-pleasers when hosting. It’s a deceptively simple and fast recipe that never fails to impress. This easy cobbler recipe has a slightly cakey texture with crisp, salty edges from the melted butter. It's topped with irresistibly sweet peach slices - and you can use fresh or canned peaches.
Pair it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of fresh whipped cream for the perfect last-minute dessert!
This classic peach cobbler is quick and easy to whip up during peach season, typically from July to September. Get your hands on some deliciously ripe fresh peaches from your local farmers market or grocery store and make this cobbler ASAP!
Drained, canned peach slices also work wonderfully in this recipe. I prefer to buy peaches canned in fruit juice or a light syrup made from cane sugar instead of corn syrup. But the latter could be the way to go if you love super-sweet treats.
This post will give you all the tips and tricks on how to make a traditional peach cobbler from scratch.

This cobbler is based on a family recipe I first shared with my nectarine cobbler. This version is made in a cast iron skillet with sliced nectarines and brown butter. You may also like this fresh pear cobbler.
My Pap Pap adores this peach cobbler recipe and I now make it for his birthday and other holidays in place of a gift. He has started bringing me big jars of peaches so I always have the ingredients on hand to whip him up a homemade cobbler. 🙂

How To Make Peach Cobbler
Step 1: Wash, peel and slice peaches if using fresh. Mix dry ingredients in a bowl.

Step 4: Pour the thin batter on top of the melted butter. Do not stir.
Step 5: Generously top with sliced peaches. Do not stir.
Step 6: Bake according to the instructions on the recipe card until golden brown.
Expert Tips & Tricks
- Choose firm, ripe peaches for the best texture when baked.
- A 9" round pie dish, a 9x9" square pan, an 11x7" rectangular dish, or a 10" cast iron skillet all work great for this recipe.
- The pancake-like batter will be fairly thin, which is completely normal. If it seems too runny, add a tablespoon or two of flour and whisk it in. I’ve done this myself when I accidentally added too much milk.

Easy Peach Cobbler Recipe
This easy peach cobbler has a slightly cakey texture with crisp, salty edges from the melted butter - you can use fresh or canned peach slices! This is a deceptively simple and fast recipe that never fails to impress.
- Prep Time: 15
- Cook Time: 45-60
- Total Time: 60-75
- Yield: 8 1x
- Category: Cobbler, Dessert
- Method: Bake
- Cuisine: American
Ingredients
- 2 heaping cups of sliced fresh peaches, about 2-3 fresh peaches* (see notes for canned)
- ⅓ cup salted butter
- ½ cup granulated white sugar
- ¾ cup all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- Pinch of salt
- ¾ cup milk of choice
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Wash, peel and slice 2 to 3 fresh peaches, discarding the pits. Measure 2 heaping cups of sliced peaches and set aside.
- In a mixing bowl, mix the dry ingredients including sugar, flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Pour in the milk and whisk to combine until smooth. The batter will have a thin consistency.
- Add butter to a baking dish (I like to use an 11x7" casserole dish or a 9" round pie dish) and place in the oven to melt. Once melted, remove the baking dish. Pour the batter over the butter. Do not stir.
- Top with sliced fresh peach slices or drained canned peaches. Do not stir.
- Return the baking dish to the oven and bake the cobbler at 350°F for 45-60 minutes, or until the edges of the cobbler are crisp and dark golden brown and the top of the dessert is a light golden brown color.
- Remove from oven once baked through and allow to cool for 10 minutes before enjoying. Serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream if desired.
- Store at room temperature for up to 2 days or in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Notes
- See the blog post for more baking tips and ways to customize this recipe.
- See my "Expert Tips & Tricks" section for recommended baking dish sizes.
- If using unsalted butter, add ¼ teaspoon salt.
- If using canned peaches, be sure they are drained well. I buy 2 15oz. cans of peach slices but I don't use the entire 2 cans. You should have about ½ cup of peaches left over to enjoy on the side.
