These matcha white chocolate cookies are easy to make and are a great option when you’re looking for something a little different from a traditional cookie recipe. Matcha and coconut is another perfect flavor combination. Make these coconut macaroon cookies to pair with your matcha cookies. This combo makes a beautiful spread to bring to a holiday party or share with family and friends.

    Why You'll Love This Recipe

    • This recipe does not require any chilling time! Many cookie recipes ask that you chill the cookie dough before scooping and baking. While this is usually worth the extra time and effort, these matcha cookies can be baked right away!
    • These cookies are delightfully soft and chewy with slightly crisp edges.
    • Matcha adds a unique, delicious flavor to these soft sugar cookies. I’ve heard people say they taste similar to those Pillsbury pre-cut holiday cookies.
    • For those of you who love the taste of white chocolate, you’re going to love this recipe! I typically use dark chocolate in most of my bakes, but white chocolate pairs wonderfully with the matcha.
    • These cookies have a fun green color that is totally natural. This makes them a fun option for kids, holidays like Christmas, St. Patrick’s Day, or even Halloween.

    Ingredients

    • Salted butter
    • Granulated sugar
    • Brown sugar
    • Egg
    • Vanilla extract
    • All-purpose flour
    • Baking soda
    • Matcha powder
    • Salt
    • White chocolate chips

See the recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.

    Substitutions

Need to make a substitution or missing an ingredient? Here are some ways you can alter this recipe to fit your unique dietary needs.

    • Gluten-free? I have not tested these cookies with any flour other than all-purpose flour, so I cannot speak to how this recipe would turn out with other flour. I would recommend trying a gluten-free 1:1 baking flour.

    Variations

Here are some fun ideas you can try to customize your matcha cookies, from using different chocolate chips to rolling in sugar to drizzling with a glaze:

    • Swap the white chocolate chips for another chocolate of your choice! Try milk or dark chocolate chips for a richer chocolate flavor.
    • Make chipless cookies! I have also made this recipe sans chocolate chips and it is still just as amazing! The matcha powder really becomes the star of the show and you get to enjoy a tender, chewy cookie texture without any chocolate chips.
    • Roll your cookie dough balls in “matcha sugar.” I have not tried rolling these cookie dough balls in granulated sugar before baking, but I imagine it would work well. Think cinnamon sugar as in what you would use for snickerdoodle cookies, but substitute the cinnamon for a little matcha powder.
    • Drizzle these cookies with a glaze. A simple glaze is perfect if you skip the chocolate chips but still want to add something fun. I would recommend drizzling a vanilla, matcha or strawberry glaze on top. Most glazes are made with powdered sugar, vanilla extract and just a drop of milk or water to get a thinner consistency.

This recipe has not been tested with other substitutions or variations. If you replace or add any ingredients, please let us know how it turned out in the comments below!

How To Make Matcha Cookies with White Chocolate

Step 6: Use a cookie scoop to scoop 6 cookies onto a parchment paper-lined baking sheet at a time.

Step 7: Press the tops of the dough balls into extra white chocolate chips. (Mini chips are pictured here.)

Step 8: Let cookies cool on the baking sheet. Store cooled cookies in an airtight container for up to 7 days.

    Expert Baking Tips

    • Place your oven rack in the center of your oven. The bottoms could burn if you bake cookies too low in the oven and the chocolate chips could burn if too high in the oven.
    • Line your baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking. I have not tried to make these cookies directly on the sheet pan or on a silicone mat.
    • Use a medium-sized cookie scoop to portion out the cookie dough. Roll each dough ball in between your palms to form a round ball. Gently press the tops of each cookie dough ball into more white chocolate chips for a professional-looking cookie.
    • This is a no-chill cookie recipe so you do not need to chill the cookie dough before baking. Chilling the dough may affect the bake and texture and you may end up with slightly taller, fluffier cookies that spread less since the butter in the dough is cold.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question about this recipe? Here are some additional tips and commonly asked questions:

    What is matcha?

Matcha is a type of green tea that is finely ground into a powder. It is a traditional Japanese tea that has been used in Japanese tea ceremonies for centuries. Matcha green tea has many health benefits and can be used to make tea, lattes, baked goods, and more.

    Does matcha have caffeine?

Yes, matcha does contain caffeine. The amount of caffeine in matcha depends on the brand you use as the quality will vary. Some feel that drinking matcha has fewer effects from caffeine than drinking coffee. Matcha has natural calming properties that help ease the side effects of caffeine.

    What does matcha taste like?

Matcha powder has a slightly sweet and bitter flavor. Overall, matcha has a unique and distinct taste that is something you may time to appreciate, similar to dark chocolate. Lower-quality matcha powder can have a more bitter flavor. This can also occur when matcha is used with very hot water.

What kind of matcha powder should you use?

I recommend looking for high-quality matcha powder to get the best-tasting results. Matcha powder should have a bright green color. Culinary grade matcha is more affordable and is typically used in baking. Ceremonial grade matcha is more expensive and is used for traditional tea ceremonies.

I typically use the matcha powder from Navitas Organics as this is easy for me to find and has a good flavor. Other popular brands of matcha powder include Pique, The Republic of Tea, and Mighty Leaf Tea. If you are having trouble finding matcha powder near you, I recommend checking your local health foods store or you can find some good options online!

    Equipment

You don’t need any special equipment to make this recipe. All you will need is a standard baking sheet, parchment paper, a mixing bowl, measuring cups and spoons, a rubber spatula, and a cookie scoop or spoon.

    Storage

    Room Temperature

Store cooled cookies in an airtight container for up to a week. Cookies are best enjoyed in the first 3-4 days.

    Freezing Instructions

Store cooled cookies in a freezer-safe container or storage bag for up to 2 months. Thaw at room temperature and enjoy!

How to store leftover cookie dough balls that have not been baked? Add unbaked cookie dough balls to a freezer bag. Leave some space in between each dough ball so they don’t stick together. Lay flat in the freezer.

When ready to bake, remove the cookie dough balls from the freezer and let them thaw at room temperature for a few hours or in the fridge overnight. If you’re in a rush or need freshly baked cookies ASAP, decrease your oven temperature by 25F and bake for a few extra minutes to ensure they are baked enough in the centers.

Baked cookies that are made with frozen cookie dough will not be exactly the same in appearance, texture, etc. as cookies that are made with fresh cookie dough.

    • Yield: 12-15 1x
    • Category: Cookies
    • Method: Bake
    • Cuisine: American

    Ingredients

    Units Scale
    • ½ cup salted butter, softened
    • ¼ cup granulated sugar
    • ½ cup brown sugar, packed
    • 1 large egg
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • ¼ teaspoon salt
    • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
    • ½ teaspoon baking soda
    • 1 tablespoon + 2 teaspoons matcha powder (culinary grade)
    • ½ cup white chocolate chips (I used mini chips)

    Instructions

    1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (176°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
    2. In a mixing bowl, cream together softened butter and sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy.
    3. Add an egg and some vanilla extract to the bowl, and continue to beat until well combined.
    4. In a separate bowl, mix together the dry ingredients, making sure the matcha powder is fully incorporated into the flour.
    5. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients in the mixing bowl, and beat until you have a sticky dough. Fold in the white chocolate chip cookies with a rubber spatula.
    6. Use a small or medium-sized cookie scoop to portion out the dough into about 12 to 15 dough balls. Roll scooped cookie dough in between your palms to form a round ball. Gently press the tops of the cookie dough balls into extra white chocolate chips. Place 6 cookie dough balls onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving at least 2 inches between each one.
    7. Bake the cookies on the center rack of your oven for about 12 minutes. The edges should look crisp, the white chocolate chips may start to look golden and the bottoms of the cookies may appear are lightly golden.
    8. Cool the cookies on the baking sheet for at least 3 minutes before transferring them to a plate or cooling rack to cool completely.
    9. Store the cooled cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.

OMG. These cookies were AMAZING!! I love matcha lattes and I've never baked with matcha before so I wanted to give this recipe a try. I will definitely be making these cookies again. I made some with white chocolate chips and some of semi sweet chocolate chips and both were delicious. My husband loved them too!
